Instead of having to pay £60 for a wireless adapter for my 360, can I just use the ethernet cable, and connect it to my computer? I can’t connect it to my modem cos its downstairs, and i am upstairs.

yes you can plug your xbox 360 to your PCs ethernet port. all you need to do is allow Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) which enables a Windows computer to share its Internet connection with computers on local area networks.
