Press release
LONDON — June 5, 2007 — HTC Corp. (TAIEX: 2498; “HTC”), the world’s leading provider of Microsoft Windows Mobile-based smart devices, today announced the global launch of the HTC Touch, a deceptively small and stylish mobile phone that ushers in an innovative new concept in intuitive touch screen navigation. Orange is the first pan-European operator to launch the HTC Touch. The device brings a new level of simplicity to the powerful and function-rich device experience that today’s mobile customers demand.
Building on its rich ten-year history of mobile phone innovations, the HTC Touch™ represents extensive research and development and the conviction that fingertip control will enable more efficient, natural and intuitive touch screen navigation. The groundbreaking HTC Touch™ offers a new and unique way of controlling touch screen-based devices by recognising and responding to the sweep of a finger across the screen. It is intelligent enough to distinguish between finger and stylus input and then respond accordingly.
“With the HTC Touch™, access to your most commonly used content, contacts and features is only a simple finger flick away,” said Peter Chou, CEO and President of HTC. “Mobile phone makers have done a great job of cramming ever-more exciting features into ever-smaller phones. But the way in which one accesses these increasingly sophisticated features has not kept pace. That ends today with the HTC Touch™.”
Smart, stylish and versatile, the HTC Touch™ brings together a wide variety of communication, entertainment and professional capabilities that enable mobile consumers to balance work and play. The new HTC-designed homescreen provides one-touch access to emails, text messages, calendar appointments and contacts, as well as current weather conditions and forecasts for hundreds of cities around the world.
The HTC Touch™ is the first device to feature TouchFLO™, the new underlying touch screen technology developed by HTC. Consumers simply sweep their finger up the display to launch an animated, three-dimensional interface comprising three screens: Contacts, Media and Applications. The interface can be spun by swiping a finger right or left across the display, providing efficient access to the features consumers use most. TouchFLO™ also enhances finger touch scrolling and browsing of Web pages, documents, messages and contact lists.
Leveraging the broad functionality of Windows Mobile 6 Professional, the HTC Touch™ includes Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile and the capabilities to run thousands of third-party applications. Users can surf the web with Internet Explorer®, send and receive emails, chat and upload files to the internet.
The HTC Touch™ also features a 2 mega-pixel camera, a large 2.8-inch colour LCD screen and comes with a 1GB microSD card, giving users the versatility to store, upload and share multimedia content with ease.
Availability
The announcement marks the first time that HTC has introduced an HTC product globally, and comes almost exactly a year after the company launched its first own-branded products in June 2006. The HTC Touch™ will also be the first HTC-branded product to be sold in Asia. The HTC Touch™ will be available to customers across Europe and Asia this month, beginning today in the United Kingdom.
The HTC Touch™ will be initially available to Orange customers in the UK, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
Yves Maitre, VP Devices, Orange, says “We are delighted to be first to launch this innovative new smartphone, which will open the door to widespread use of touch screen devices. Orange has the widest portfolio of Microsoft smartphones and was the first operator to launch a Windows 6.0 device. This latest addition cements Orange’s position as the leading operator in the smartphone market. Orange and HTC have a heritage of innovating with new types of smartphone and the HTC Touch™ is a great example of this.”
T-Mobile will launch a customised version of the device which will be named the MDA Touch across key European markets. The innovative and strong multi-media feature set of the MDA Touch will be a powerful fit to T-Mobile’s “web’n’walk” proposition.
“We are proud to announce that at the same time we are launching the MDA Touch. T-Mobile is continuing its successful cooperation and development of innovative products with HTC as partner,”says Michael Hagspihl, Executive Vice President Terminal Management, T-Mobile International. “T-Mobile already set standards in the past by providing its customers with innovative PDAs like the MDA Vario II and Ameo.”
HTC Touch P3450 Reviews:
Mobile-Review Reviewed HTC Touch P3450 and gave out “One of the mentioned specific features of the communicator was the 3G support, while the rest of its spec sheet was pretty much par for the course, which automatically stuck the “budget” stamp on it.The first thing you run into, apart from very portable dimensions – the screen surface. We have already come to expect it to be recessed into the casing, which is due to several reasons: first, for the sake of its safety, and then to reduce the number of scratches and scuffs it picks up. In the Elf however, it is not. The display’s surface is mounted flush with the front fascia. Apparently, it’s been made not for design’s sake alone, but also to make for easier stylus-less device management.Another step towards out of the ordinary controls scheme is forgoing navigation buttons. The Elf’s front plate houses only the five-way navigation control and pick/hang up keys.”
LaptopMag Reviewed HTC Touch P3450 and gave out ” With a look that better resembles a super-skinny PDA than a traditional mobile phone, the 3.9 x 2.2 x 0.5-inch HTC Touch, and designed homescreen sits on top of Windows Mobile 6 and provides one-touch access to weather forecasts, appointments, and other essential data.A triband (900/1800/1900-MHz) unlocked phone, the Touch uses a GPRS/EDGE connection for surfing the Web when you’re out of hotspot range, which made visiting image-heavy sites like CNN.com a patience test. The Touch also supports stereo Bluetooth for jamming to your favorite MP3, AAC, and WMA files.”
Pocket-lint.co.uk Reviewed HTC Touch P3450 and gave out ” The good:Touchscreen, interface, Wi-Fi.The bad:No 3G, on-screen QWERTY keyboard small. We say:A good strong offering from HTC and one that will certainly give Apple a run for its money.”
PCMag Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “Since the Touch is an all-touch-screen device, figuring out how to get text into it is one of the phone’s big challenges. Microsoft’s on-screen keyboard is built for tiny miniature people, and alas, the full-screen transcriber had some real trouble with accuracy. The Touch also feels slow, a problem endemic to touch-screen Windows Mobile 5 or 6 devices with 200-MHz processors. (The T-Mobile MDA and Wing have the same issue.) Sometimes the virtual buttons took several presses to respond. Launching applications, especially Windows Media Player, feels gummy.”
RegHardware Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “HTC’s Touch is undeniably a smart-looking phone, but while it’s a stunner in pictures, in your hands it quickly becomes a fingerprint-plastered mess. Yes, it offers some neat touch-control improvements on the standard Windows Mobile 6 user interface, but for all the fancy visuals, it’s no iPhone. The trouble with all this TouchFlo stuff is that it’s only skin deep. Even LG’s Prada phone has a UI that feels designed for touch control and not tacked on to another OS. Too soon you drop into the standard, ugly-by-comparison Windows Mobile 6 look and feel.”
PCPro Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “Wireless options are reasonable without being a headline feature. GPRS and EDGE are practical for inbox synchronisation, although the latter is about as much use as a steering wheel on a motorbike here in the UK. But the lack of 3G means online video is out, and we noticed a distinct slowness while browsing the web with the Touch, compared to the 3G Nokia N95.”
CNET Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “The good: The compact HTC Touch features an advanced touch screen that lets you operate the smart phone with your fingertips. The Windows Mobile 6 smart phone also has an updated interface, integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and a 2-megapixel camera. The bad: The Touch’s tiny onscreen keyboard makes it a pain to enter any text, and the TouchFLO feature doesn’t work in landscape mode. The SIM card and microSD slots are hard to access. Also, speakerphone quality was poor, and the device can be sluggish at times. The bottom line: The HTC Touch boasts an innovative touch screen and sleek interface, but the lack of a sizable keyboard really limits the usability of this device. And despite being impressed by the beautiful hardware, the Windows Mobile smart phone lags in performance and needs a bit more tweaking before we’re ready to snatch one up.”
MobileBurn Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “For me, the HTC Touch addresses these problems. It certainly is crippled when it comes to finger based text entry, but apart from that, I rarely need the stylus at all in typical use. The Touch turns out to be a good passive messaging and data consumption device. It has the power to get information to the user, and present it in a usable fashion, but lacks some of the practical aspects of other Pocket PC devices that allow users to edit documents or create new messages easily.”
CrunchGear Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “he screen looks fantastic, the WiFi is fast, and the TouchFLO interface is pretty fun to use.You can access your media via the aforementioned interface and playback music and video you’ve recorded with the flick of a finger. Included are USB headphones, a data cable, and a carrying case to make your experience a little more enjoyable.”
Trusted Reviews Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “The Touch is a terribly flawed attempt at a mainstream consumer product from HTC. There’s no denying that the TouchFLO interface works well, but all it does is take you to applications which then require traditional Windows Mobile stylus input. It may be the prettiest device that HTC has brought to market, but that’s really all it has going for it.”
MobileTechReview Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “The HTC Touch is a beautiful, very small PDA phone, something we just about never get to say. It’s the perfect phone for style conscious buyers who need a PDA’s features and advanced functions, but don’t want to carry an ugly brick. However, those who text or email frequently won’t be happy with the tiny on-screen keyboard and (very functional) handwriting recognition. The Touch uses a difference kind of touch screen to achieve finger-friendliness, especially gesture-awareness. It’s not a multi-touch display like the upcoming iPhone and you can use a stylus, again unlike the iPhone which needs a human touch to work correctly.”
PocketNow Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “The screen looks great when you’re indoors, but if you take this outside, the screen becomes very difficult if not impossible to see even on its highest brightness setting. The 2 megapixel built-in camera has a slightly different interface than previous HTC Camera applications. The camera interface is full of cryptic icons, but you should recognize most of them from using other cameras.”
Pocket-lint Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “Fitting in the palm of your hand and certainly having a nice build quality feel to it, the only other element to adorn the design is the 2 megapixel camera on the rear of the device. This is a smartphone that will let you reply to messages, but to be honest is more of a check to see what messages have come through rather than suggesting you write lengthy replies - that’s what HTC’s Ameo is for.”
Infosync Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “To improve on Windows Media Player, HTC has added the Audio Manager app, which basically acts as a music player with large buttons, to facilitate using it on the touch screen…The touch screen lags behind, and the new TouchFlo features are hardly skin deep. Still, it feels like a good start getting WM6 to be more touch sensitive. Unfortunately, users who need a keyboard for any reason beyond dialing will be frustrated by the onscreen, pop-up keyboard on Windows Mobile.”
Brighthand Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “The Touch is one of the slickest looking smartphones I’ve seen in a while. It uses a standard tablet shape, but its rounded corners and minimalist design really make it stand out of the crowd. The Touch’s 2.0 megapixel camera is a step above the 1.3 megapixel one you typically find in mobile phones these days.It handles still images quite well, but movement in videos tends to be a touch blurry. Both of these can be sent as MMS messages.”
ITReviews Reviewed HTC Touch and gave out “More innovative is what HTC calls the TouchFLO interface. You swipe a finger upwards from the bottom of the screen to the top and it turns up a new screen. Then swipe left-to-right or right-to-left to get a second screen and a third. The transition between screens is cute - you get the feeling a cube is rotating inside the HTC Touch in a sort of Tardis-like fashion.”
PCPro Review HTC Touch Review and gave out “The Touch is tantalising proof that software and hardware designers are fast approaching the stage where all you’ll need to control your phone is a set of reliable fingers and a touchscreen. But it isn’t there yet. It’s no good being able to start a text message application with your fingers if you can’t write the text message itself. And the same goes for browsing the internet, replying to emails and even simply browsing files.”
