Clearly aimed at a female audience, the small 14mm thick slider is tidy and compact. Sliding the slider design up reveals a small keypad and the unit we had was a black and Mysterious Green, although you can get a Spring Yellow version.

Pocket-lint Reviewed Sony Ericsson S500i and gave out “The good:Pretty, 2 megapixel camera, camera software, music software, easy to use.The bad:Light mood feature is just a gimmick.Themes and light shows aside, other features on the phone include a 2 megapixel digital camera revealed when sliding that slider and the usual array of Sony Ericsson software such as the ability to blog the photo as well as edit the image via Sony Ericsson’s PhotoDJ application.”

Because it’s not part of the Walkman or the Cyber-shot series, the S500i’s multimedia features are rather Spartan.

CNET Reviewed Sony Ericsson S500i and gave out “The good: Compact design; unique themes with fancy lighting effects; hot-swappable Memory Stick Micro card slot. The bad: Buttons are tiny; very basic feature set.The bottom line: The Sony Ericsson S500i is a very basic slider phone and you’ll be buying it almost mainly for its unique themes and fancy lighting at the sides.”

There is a unique feature to the key design in the S500i – all buttons here are pieces of plastic tacked on a slab. So if you get heavy on the keypad, it might get covered with cracks or splits on the keys.

Mobile-Review Reviewed Sony Ericsson S500i and gave out “The device is equipped with a 2 MP camera with a CMOS matrix without auto-focus. The device supports three possible resolutions - 1632×1224, 640×480, 160×120 pixels. Two types of data compression (Normal and Fine) are at your disposal. The majority of the sample photos are in the Fine quality. The photos differ in size almost two times depending on the resolution. Thus a photo in the Normal mode takes up about 300 KB while the Fine quality results in 500-600 KB. Saving a photo takes the same time not depending on chosen type and makes about 1-2 seconds, and that is quite speedy for such file size.”

Nokia N75 simple design, easy-to-use Symbian UI and AT&T’s 3G network make this a clear winner, but it’s far from perfect.

Crunchgear Reviewed Nokia N75 and gave out “The layout of the keypad is quite friendly and the oversized keys ensure you’ll hit those digits every time. Calls were clear on both ends, but call quality hasn’t been an issue for me with Nokia handsets. The Carl Zeissless 2-megapixel camera with built-in flash and 10x zoom offers six different scene modes for just about any situation you may find yourself, which includes Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Night , Night Portrait and User defined. Let’s be perfectly honest with each other on this subject.”

Comfortable keypad. Good messaging options. Wide range of audio files supported. Good music controls.

Infosync Reviewed Nokia N75 and gave out “It has some good calling and messaging features, and the Symbian OS has a wide range of available apps, but the phone disappoints in areas where N-series phones usually shine, especially with its camera.Web browsing – Very good :The Nokia N75 features the same Web browser we liked so much on the Nokia N95, with its smooth scrolling and mini-map navigation panel… ”

The most significant aspect of the Katana DLX lies in its rich multimedia feature set. A huge upgrade over the other Katanas, the Katana DLX actually has EV-DO, a megapixel camera, and more.

CNET Reviewed Sanyo Katana DLX and gave out “The good:The Sanyo Katana DLX has an attractive and slender flip-phone design, plus an impressive multimedia feature set with good sound quality. The bad: The Sanyo Katana DLX has skinny side buttons, and the speakerphone quality was so-so. We also would’ve liked external music player controls. The bottom line: The Sanyo Katana DLX is the best Sanyo cell phone to date, with a fashionable design, plenty of features, and good performance. ”

The idea behind the kick-sliding mechanism is that it curves the phone closer to your mouth and ear. While it’s a nice idea, in practice we’re not sure it’s completely necessary and there’s an unwelcome side effect in the form of a curved keypad.

CNET UK Reviewed Motorola Rizr Z8 and gave out “One of the Z8’s best features, and potentially most useful if you’re a telly addict, is the ability to program your Sky Box using the pre-installed Sky Box app, and watch a variety of Sky channels over a 3G connection. This feature works rather well.Picture quality from the camera was relatively good but, again, don’t expect to print out large high-quality prints. Not only do the S9 headphones look good but they’re also quite comfortable to wear and have very easy-to-use controls on the side of each earbud…”

Among its plusses are a better camera, far superior battery life and a tidy overall design. SIM free it is cheaper direct from Nokia too – by a considerable margin.

Trusted Reviews Reviewed Nokia N76 and gave out “While I find it unwieldy, the overall size of the N76 does have two important advantages: the inside screen and number pad are both large. All in all, the numberpad is comfortable to use. It might be flat, but there is some give in the keys and you get a reassuring beep when one is pressed. The main camera is a 2-megapixel job. I can’t help feeling that for an N series this is below par. Apart from the problems I had framing pictures outdoors in bright sunshine, due to the poor outdoor screen visibility, the camera had trouble capturing colours accurately.”
